Batman and Jesus are Angel’s heroes. My eleven-year-old sponsored child from Mexico named them worthy of his admiration. The connection between Batman and Jesus was clear. Both are brave, strong, and help those in need. They battle evil and win. Batman and Jesus are the ultimate dynamic duo.
In Ephesians 6, Paul paints a picture of evil. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6: 12 (NIV)
To fight darkness throughout Gotham City, Batman always prepared. Before he jumped into the Bat mobile, he donned his Bat suit with its cool cape, high boots, and signature pointed cowl. Batman never fought evil without his full-body armor and neither should we.
In Paul’s letter, he instructs us how to dress for battle. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:11 (NIV)
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:13-17 (NIV)
On hard days, it may feel that evil is winning. But God’s Word reminds us that the Ultimate Superhero holds evil’s short leash. In the end, good wins because God wins. “It is written: ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ” Romans 14:11 (NIV)
In the meantime, we can be lights in the darkness and agents of hope to the hopeless. Pastor Rick Warren said, “Much of what happens in our world is evil and bad, but God specializes in bringing good out of it.” Giving a child hope, encouragement, and love brings good to a world filled with darkness. Please consider sponsoring a child today.
If you sponsor but haven’t heard from your child in a long time, I feel your pain. I miss Angel and news of his life. Evil wants us to be silent, give up, and wait for the pandemic to end. But God commands us to step up, suit up, and stand up. Our sponsored children need to know we are with them through the confusion, unknowns, and sickness. Each written letter is a treasured message of hope.
Angel recognized the world needs more than a comic book legend in the war against evil. A fictional superhero provides entertainment, but a real-life Savior offers peace in the midst of turmoil.
Several years ago, my husband and I visited Angel on a Compassion sponsor trip. What a joyful experience to present him with a Batman t-shirt and Spanish Bible. Gifts to honor his heroes, the dynamic duo. Perhaps the new shirt made him feel stronger, bolder, and invincible. But the Word of God, the sword of the Spirit, held the real power needed to battle evil.
