Overnight, the teenager became the man of the house. When Bilali’s father died suddenly, he stepped into the role of provider. His dream of attending university for accounting would remain only a dream.
Over the years, Bilali’s letters through Compassion International shared his job search news. We stood with him in prayer during the frustrating journey.
In February, we spent time with our sponsored son in Tanzania. Together, we paused to praise this reserved young man and his job: a tuk tuk driver. Throughout Tanzania, people and cargo travel on motorized three-wheeled taxis called tuk tuks. We rejoiced when his Compassion Project leader praised Bilali’s work ethic and character as a driver and as a mentor at the Project.
With a high unemployment rate that will climb due to the virus pandemic, we paused to praise God for employment.
During our time together, Bilali shared new dreams. He committed to working as a dependable and safe tuk-tuk driver within his community. As his reputation grows, Bilali dreams of becoming a car driver and eventually a safari driver. New dreams.
Dreams change as life changes. Bilali exhibited maturity navigating the death of his father and the demise of his accounting dream. He accepted the new responsibility thrust upon him: provider of the family. Drawing on God’s strength during a difficult time, Bilali embraced new dreams.
He turns 21 this year and sponsorship will end soon. Many tears accompanied our goodbyes. We presented our beloved Bilali with a gift: a blanket offering a blessing. From Numbers chapter 6, God’s Holy words for Moses to the Israelites. Though his earthly father was gone, may Bilali feel the warmth of his Heavenly Father’s love wrapped around him.
If Covid 19 dashed your dreams, pause to praise God for Blessings and may you find peace in new dreams.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)
